Port of Liverpool 25MW Solar Array: Alexandra Dock

UK’s Largest Solar Project connects to grid

E.ON, the multinational energy company, and Peel Ports Group have hit a big milestone at the Port of Liverpool. Kicking off commercial operations for the first phase of a 25MW rooftop solar array at the Alexandra Dock warehouse. A key part of Peel Ports Group’s operations in their home city.

The facility also known as the ‘Alex Shed’ will be the largest rooftop solar project in the UK. The Port of Liverpool expects it to meet around one-quarter of its annual electricity demands

Workers have fitted close to 7,000 solar panels onto the ‘Alex Shed’ warehouse, and they are already supplying power to the grid. This is just the first step in a bold plan to install up to 48,000 panels across several buildings at the Port of Liverpool. Covering nearly 260,000 square feet, the Alexandra Dock warehouse now hosts one of the UK’s biggest roof-mounted solar arrays. The team kept all work within the port, maximised roof space, and reduced disruption to the local community by transporting all equipment and materials by sea.

Port of Liverpool: Peel Ports Group and E.O.N

This project is part of a 25-year agreement between Peel Ports Group and E.ON. With E.ON covering the costs and managing delivery. They’ve also committed to hiring local contractors for installation and ongoing maintenance. In 2024, Peel Ports Group projected that its entire portfolio would be up and running by mid-2026. Initially estimating a total capacity of 31MW, which has since been reduced. When finished, the facility at the Port of Liverpool is set to become one of the UK’s largest rooftop solar projects. Expected to generate 25MW of electricity—enough to cover about a quarter of the Port of Liverpool’s annual energy needs. To put into perspective it could power roughly 10,000 average UK homes. Based on an average household consumption of 2,700 kWh per year.

The grid connection is a major milestone for Peel Ports Group. at the Port of Liverpool. Which aims to source half its electricity from renewables by the end of the decade. The rooftop solar system will be key to achieving their net-zero emissions target by 2040.
