  • 350 kW Chargers: Can add up to 200-300 miles of range in about 15-20 minutes, depending on the vehicle and battery capacity.

The UK saw a 40% increase in the amount of ultra-rapid EV charging stations during the first half of 2023 however, the wider adoption of advancements in battery technologies will be required to ensure battery chemistry and thermal management systems will allow all EVs to safely accept higher charging rates.

Ultra-Rapid charging generates significant heat, requiring advanced cooling technologies for both the charging station and the vehicle’s battery to ensure safe and efficient operation.   • Audi e-tron GT max charging speed 270kW
  • Hyundai Ioniq5 max charging speed 350kW
  • Kia EV6 max charging speed 350kW
  • TESLA Model 3 max charging speed 170kW
  • BMW i5 max charging speed 205kW
  • Mercedes- Benz EQS max charging speed 200kW
  • Genesis GV60 max charging speed 350kW

When it comes to public charging for ultra-rapid compatible EV’s options are more limited due to current uptake but are still available from many providers including:

  • Tesla
  • Instavolt
  • BP Pulse
  • Osprey

Ultra-Rapid EV Charging: Challenges

Grid Impact: Ultra-rapid chargers require significant power, which can strain local grids. Solutions include integrating renewable energy sources and energy storage systems to buffer demand.

Infrastructure Costs: High initial investment for deploying ultra-rapid chargers. Public-private partnerships and government incentives can help mitigate costs.

Operational Costs: Efficient management and maintenance strategies are needed to keep operational costs low.

Battery Longevity: Frequent use of ultra-rapid charging can potentially impact battery life. Ongoing research focuses on battery chemistries and management systems to minimize degradation.

Advancements in Smart Charging and AI technologies could be the answer in terms of managing the challenges of ultra-rapid charging balancing charging times based on real time grid load in addition to electricity pricing.

Future innovations in ultra-rapid EV charging could also see the introduction of standardised, universal payment systems allowing EV owners to use multiple charging networks with a single app or account.
